Dear UNCW PED 101 student,
Student alcohol misuse is one of the most serious issues among today's college campuses. The UNCW community is committed to confronting this issue with a combination of education, outreach, and prevention of alcohol-related consequences among our students. We know that 52% of UNCW students drink in moderation in addition to the 20% who abstain from drinking altogether; however, a number of students misuse alcohol and create disruption for other community members.

UNCW encourages students to make safe, healthy, and legal choices about personal alcohol use or non-use. As such, we would like all PED 101 students to have a basic understanding of alcohol-related issues on campus.

We are asking all PED 101 students to complete CollegeAlc, an on-line alcohol education program. This 90-minute course focuses on building skills to avoid alcohol-related consequences, learning how to handle alcohol-related emergencies, and developing strategies to help others who struggle with alcohol misuse.

We are confident that this information will provide you an advantage toward preparing for a healthy UNCW experience, and will arm you with information about how to make a difference on our campus regarding this very important issue.

All PED 101 students are being asked to complete this entire online course (during the specified week) in place of one lecture and one quiz.

Thank you for supporting this educational initiative. I do hope you enjoy this interactive online learning experience!

Sincerely,

Dr. Cara Sidman
Assistant Professor - Department of Health & Applied Human Sciences
PED 101 Coordinator
